Rinnai Error Code 61
Rinnai code 61 means the combustion fan isn't running the way the control board expects. Rinnai's bulletin lists it as "Combustion Fan Failure", and since the heater won't light the burner without that fan, you're out of hot water until it's sorted.
Why the fan matters on a Rinnai tankless
A Rinnai tankless relies on its combustion fan to bring in air and push exhaust out the vent. When you open a hot tap, the fan spins up before the burner lights. If the fan doesn't turn, or the board can't confirm it's running right, you get code 61 and no flame. That's a safety lockout. A burner without a working fan can't move its exhaust out.
The usual causes
Rinnai's code 61 checklist has three items:
- The fan doesn't turn freely.
- Damaged or loose connections in the wiring to the motor.
- Motor winding resistance out of spec.
The longer troubleshooting guide fills in the detail. With power and gas off, the tech removes the fan motor and confirms the blower wheel spins freely. They look for debris in the fan housing. On SENSEI models they also check that the valve behind the fan motor isn't stuck closed. If the windings are open, or the fan still won't run with good windings and a free wheel, the motor gets replaced, and the PC board is the last step.
What you can check from the outside
- Listen. Open a hot tap and stand near the heater. A normal start has a fan whir before the burner lights. Silence, grinding or a rattle is useful for the tech to hear about.
- Look at the vent terminal and air intake outside. Rinnai warns that snow or ice can block the vent termination and cause operating problems or damage. Clear what you can reach without taking anything apart.
- Check for anything that could have gotten into the intake: a nest, leaves, lint from a dryer vent nearby.
- Turn the heater off at the controller, wait a minute, turn it back on and try again. If code 61 comes back, stop there.
- Write down your model and serial number from the rating plate. Fan motors are model-specific.
Don't spin the fan or pull the motor yourself. Getting to it means opening the sealed combustion side of the unit, and putting it back together wrong can leak exhaust.
When to call a technician
Any time code 61 returns after a reset. Testing motor windings, checking the wiring at the board and swapping a fan are routine for a Rinnai service tech, but they're all inside the cabinet.
For budgeting, HomeGuide puts tankless water heater repairs at $300 to $1,300 on average, with a minimum service call-out fee of $50 to $200 in some areas. It doesn't list a fan motor separately, so ask for a written quote with the part number. Our tankless water heater repair page helps you weigh a repair against replacement on an older heater.
