Generac Generator Error Codes
A Generac home standby generator shows a numbered code when it shuts down or needs attention, and the light color tells you how serious it is. A red light is an alarm, and a yellow light is a warning or a maintenance reminder.
Red or yellow: what the light means
Generac says many yellow codes are things an owner can sort out, while red codes may allow some first checks but often need an authorized dealer if they come back after you clear them. Warnings have to be fixed before they'll clear. So a yellow maintenance reminder is a chore. A red alarm that keeps coming back is a service call.
The codes we cover

| 2099 | Wiring Error, codes 2098 to 2099, red alarm | Code 2099 guide |
Other codes you may see
Generac's list also includes Overcrank at 1100 to 1101, Overspeed at 1200 to 1207, High Temperature at 1400 to 1401 and Underspeed at 1600 to 1603. Low Battery is code 2750, and Auxiliary Shutdown is 2800, which usually means the emergency shutdown switch needs resetting. If your exact number isn't listed anywhere, Generac says to look up the code that shares its first two digits.
Clearing an alarm
Fix the cause first. Generac's own wording is never to clear an alarm without correcting the cause, and some engine-protection and electrical shutdowns can't be reset by an owner at all.
On Evolution and Sync controllers, check that the external shutdown switch on the back of the unit is in the closed position, then press OFF, press ENTER as the display prompts, and press AUTO. On Nexus controllers, move the switch to OFF, press Enter twice and return to AUTO. If the same alarm comes straight back, stop clearing it.
When it's a dealer job
Generac lists Overcrank, Overspeed, Wiring Error and several battery and charger codes among the ones that call for a dealer on its newer units. Only an authorized dealer can file warranty claims, and Generac asks you to leave the code on the display so the technician can read it. Write down the weather, the time and what the unit was doing when it tripped.
